Jean Béliveau, this has recently and suddenly become a name for me that is accompanied by a feeling of great admiration. This Canadian man left in 2000 on a journey around the world and arrived back home only a short while back, on October 16th 2011, after walking over 75000 kilometres through 64 countries. The reason for his journey is probably not something anyone apart from himself can understand completely, though his website states the main reason was “to promote peace and non-violence for the profit of the children of the world” in support of what the UN called “the international decade for a culture of peace and non-violence for the children of the world” (2000-2010).
What this man has achieved gives me goosebumps. I too want to see what I can of the world, but to do as he did: leave everything behind and walk around the world for 11 years, alone and often in very basic and/or dangerous conditions, not knowing where you will sleep that night or what food there will be… I don’t think I could ever do that. I’m just not that adventurous.
I regret not having heard his name before, because now I’m looking at a website with 11 years of content to go through. It would have been better to have subscribed for his newsletter for the past years instead of it now all coming to me at the same time. I hope he writes a book about it, that would provide a better overview.
Nevertheless, endless respect for this man. Mankind is inspired by people like him!
