Keeping up-to-date

Ik ben geen geboren blogger, laat dat ondertussen al overduidelijk zijn. Of mijn leven daar nu te saai of te druk voor is laat ik in het midden, maar deze blog lijkt leeg te blijven. Ik ben ze echter niet vergeten en ga ze ook niet verwijderen. Deze blog was gemaakt voor een bepaald doel en relatief binnenkort zal ze haar reden tot bestaan kunnen uitoefenen.

Voor de mensen die het nog niet wisten: ik vertrek in januari 2011 gedurende 5 maand op erasmus richting Helsinki, Finland. Ik zal aldaar aan de Aalto University (AU), de vroegere Helsinki School of Economics (HSE), studeren. De voorbereidingen hiervoor zijn reeds voor een groot deel getroffen: na wat over-en-’t-weer-gemail met mijn internationale coördinator en haar assistent kreeg ik toestemming om naar Helsinki te gaan, ondanks het feit dat er eigenlijk geen plek meer over was, en is mijn studieprogramma goedgekeurd. Het enige wat rest is een handtekening en een aantal formulieren voor de Finnen. Should be smooth sailing…

Omdat Finland toch wel ver van mijn Belgisch bedje ligt zijn er ongetwijfeld een aantal kennissen, vrienden of familieleden van mij die first-hand verhalen, beelden en ervaringen over deze vreemde, verre en koude plek met veel nieuwsgierigheid zouden volgen. En zo komen we naadloos bij het levensdoel van deze blog. Wanneer ik in het verre Noorden vertoef, zal ik hier vanalles en nog wat posten (in de veronderstelling dat er ginder iets te doen valt). Tot op die dag moeten jullie niet meer verwachten dan een zeer sporadische post af en toe. Zoals deze post, die geen enkel ander doel heeft behalve controleren of mijn blog überhaupt nog naar behoren werkt

Of er een toekomst is voor deze blog ná mijn erasmusavontuur weet ik nog niet. On va voir.

Define

It’s a word -or rather a phrase- I don’t actually use very often, but it comes to mind in every discussion, conversation or evaluation.

Define…

People talk, write, e-mail to each other. They try to bring across their thoughts and understand the thoughts of the person talking, writing or e-mailing to them. All these forms of communication are based on languages, words. Words, however, are no more than a combination of letters for which we –or our ancestors- found a certain pronunciation. They have no meaning other than the meaning we give to them.

But do *you* give it the same meaning as *I* do? How can you know what I mean to say, what *thought* I am trying to make you understand?

Right, wrong, good, bad, success, failure, nonsense, truth, wise, stupid, left, right, up, down, dry, wet, busy, lazy, slow, fast, happy, sad, …

These are words, but they do not matter. What is important is the meaning you and the person listening to you have given to the same word. How you would use and interpret a word might differ from me.

Define the words on which your arguments are built.

Use more words so I may better understand the point or thought you are trying to share. Allow my POV to adjust to yours and do the same. Perhaps then we’ll understand each other fully.

Back to school

Yup, as always during the last week of September, I’m heading back to class. No more long days filled with being shamelessly lazy, no more holiday-jobs, no more travels, no more postponing work that needs to be done ‘before school starts again’ and no more Lisbon palm trees.

Now it’s time for attending classes, getting the occasional tasks and presentations done and basically mocking about until the exams are at my doorstep.

When I hear about all the people who are already working I realize I could be a lot worse off

Though I must say that this week isn’t much of a start. Today I went to an IMBIT-gathering for like… an hour and for the rest of the week I’ll have two classes one class (all other classes are cancelled)…

Yeah, the employees of the University of Antwerp need some more time to get the new Blackboard running I suppose…

Doomsday 2012

Sounds impressive, don’t you think? I love hearing doomsday scenarios! It’s so much fun breaking them into pieces, pointing out mistakes and generally having a good laugh at them. Today, I saw this little movie on Youtube (here’s the first part out of five. You can follow the links to the right of the YouTube page yourself, can ‘t you?)

For the people don’t like watching Doomsday material, here is the summary: forget everything anyone else said in the past, the world is going to end in 2012. The 21^st of December 2012 to be exact. Many great people and civilizations have foretold it!

I admit it is put together well enough to perhaps put some insecurity into your feeble hearts. Is it all going to end? And so soon already? I mean, it must be true since all those great people have prophesized it!

Yes, ‘those great people’… Let’s make a list, shall we? What great minds are telling me that I’m not going to live long enough to see my children grow?

• The ancient oracles of Rome, Sibyl, and the oracle of Delphi:
  Yes, some weird women in a cave. In their days of glory, they gave people vague predictions of the future, which were very often ‘right’. It is very easy to be right when you’re extremely vague but that is not the point now, is it? Also, as is said in the movie, these women lived in caves… filled with gas. So not only were they weird, they were high as well. My advice: don’t bother going to Rome or Greece, just ask the first drunk you can find to predict your future.
• The Mayans:
  The Mayans had a very precise calendar up to 2012 and there it just stops. I ask myself this: who the f*ck needs a calendar that goes all the way to a thousand years from now? I won’t live that long, so why would I give a toss? Perhaps the calendar priest (or whatever) felt the same way and just said “F*ck it, I’m retiring.”
• The I Ching:
  It’s a Chinese book / game. You toss some coins a few times, get a series of combinations, you make some extremely complicated statistical calculations with them and viola, we are all going to die in 2012. Sounds legit.
• Merlin the wizard:
  Oh yes, my personal favourite! So the same guy (or same type of guy) that told king Arthur to take a sword from a stone and go find a round table in magical Camelot is now telling me when to die! Makes sense.
• Mother Shipton:
  No-one knows if she even existed, but if she existed she was a crazy woman who lived in a cave. Probably sniffing gas.
• The Holy Bible:
  Off course they are right, did you expect any different?
• Indians Native Americans:
  A little bird told them I suppose…
• Web-bot:
  Which is a computer program that reads the entire internet to read our subconscious thoughts! If the Internet didn’t contain so much spam, weird porn and utter nonsense, I’d just might consider this as a reliable source of information needed to make such delicate predictions.

I think I’ve said enough by now. But if you are inclined to believe ‘prophecies’ like this, then do yourself a favour: go to the last part and listen to the last sentence (starting 6:44).

“The fact is, we can’t foresee the future. But what we can do is: we can live in hope for the future; we can have an attitude of optimism about the future; and that really is the message of what ‘prophecy’ is about.”

So, to remain optimistic, here are some advantages for when the world does end on that December day in 2012:

• It will be quick. I’d rather have that than an ice age or something.
• It will be a very cheap Christmas in 2012.
• We will not be the only specie that dies. If I’m going down, at least I’ll take those annoying pigeons and creepy spiders with me.
• The USA will become the new South Pole. Which means that all those nukes will be forever guarded by tons of ice, clever penguins, vicious seals and great polar bears. As safe as can be!
• I will die knowing I never had to pay taxes (I will probably still be studying in 2012).
• I’ll make sure I complete n°29 on my life list on December 20^th of 2012.
• It will all be okay eventually and Belgium will be a tropical paradise.

Well… What can I say? It was great. Simply awesome. Many thanks to my companions for a trip I won’t soon forget!

Een ambitieus Europa?

Overlaatst had Marcel Vanthilt in zijn programma ‘Villa Vanthilt’ een oud spook te gast. In zijn ‘gloriedagen’ een even opmerkelijk persoon als Filip Dewinter en Jean-Marie Dedecker, nu een oud-bekende repetitor uit Gent. You loved him or hated him: Jean-Pierre Van Rossem.

Nu, eigenlijk kon me dat niets schelen. Persoonlijk vind ik die mens iets te… non-conformistisch. Maar @pitr verwees naar het Van Rossem-incident en stelde mij de vraag of zijn woorden misschien toch geen toekomstvoorspelling waren? Immers:

Ik was niet erg happig om een zware politieke dialoog aan te gaan met iemand die daar veel meer mee begaan is als mij, maar met deze tweet…

… werd ik genadeloos gedwongen tot het schrijven van een blogpost Waar denk ik dat Europa heen gaat? Heeft Jean Pierre Van Rossem een glazen bol? Is Europa zo ambitieus dat een Europese Republiek ooit een feit zal zijn? Only time will tell, maar dit is wat ik ervan denk.

Laten we eerst de E.U. het woord geven:

A unique economic and political partnership between 27 democratic European countries.

Peace, prosperity and freedom for its citizens — in a fairer, safer world.

Klinkt mooi, niet? Maar wat doen ze dan concreet?

Europa zorgde voor een vrije markt tussen de lidstaten onderling en tussen lidstaten en niet-lidstaten. Ze deed dat door wetten te vervaardigen m.b.t. handel, landbouw, visserij, economische ontwikkeling, etc. die in alle lidstaten toegepast moesten worden. Ze probeert op een gelijkaardige manier ook de mensenrechten te verdedigen en ons milieu te beschermen. Europa bracht eveneens een sterke munt naar de internationale geldmarkt: de euro. Kortom, Europa probeert overduidelijk zichzelf te verenigen tot één grote wereldmacht, i.p.v. als 27 kleine kabouterlandjes naar buiten te komen. Maar nu, een Europese Republiek?

De eerste stap: definieer ‘een republiek’. Frankrijk en de USA zijn republieken. Iran en Noord-Korea ook. Het verschil in de mate van vrijheid en welvaart is echter nogal groot. En je hebt onderscheid in o.a. parlementaire, democratische en federale republieken. Dit gezegd zijnde, over het algemeen definieer ik een republiek als “een staatsvorm met een verkozen staatshoofd (de president) en een regering”.

We leggen deze definitie naast een groot schema van de E.U. en we vergelijken:

1. Heeft Europa een regering? Ja, een Europese Raad! Met een Europees Parlement en Europese Commissie erbij.
2. Een staatshoofd/ president? Nee. De Raad wordt voorgezeten door een land, en die wisselen op regelmatige basis om. Maar de geplande Europese grondwet voorzag wel zo’n functie, een persoon die door de Raad zelf (niet echt democratisch trouwens, maar dit kan moeilijk anders met zo’n groot gebied) aangeduid zou worden voor 2,5 jaar.
   Maar de macht van die president zou wel serieus aan banden gelegd worden: hij zou zich moeten beperken tot het langetermijnbeleid van de E.U. (in samenspraak met de commissievoorzitter) en zou zich niet mogen bemoeien met de zaken van de commissie en het parlement. Maar die grondwet is (nog) niet geratificeerd, dus (voorlopig)  geen Europees president.

Dus ja, het lijkt er wel een beetje op dat Europa allures heeft om een republiek te worden.

Maar er zijn wel een aantal problemen. En net zoals de lidstaten op redelijk wat beleidsterreinen in de besluitvorming van de E.U. een vetorecht hebben, zo lijken deze problemen ook een vetorecht te hebben op de creatie van de Europese Republiek.

1. Grootte:

   Ter vergelijking: de USA is een federale republiek, gebonden aan een grondwet die de individuele vrijheden en rechten van de mens vrijwaart. De USA telt 306 miljoen inwoners en heeft een BNP van gemiddeld $13 triljoen per jaar om hen en hun economie te verzorgen. Dat is jaarlijks iets meer dan $40000 per inwoner.

   Europa telt 591 miljoen mensen en deze mensen wonen op 5967miljoen km², een goeie 60% van het grondgebied van de USA. Een totale BNP van Europa berekenen is niet eenvoudig, maar het jaarlijks BNP per inwoner is gemiddeld $24 à 25000.

   Kortom, een Europese Republiek zou met $15000 per inwoner *minder* twee maal zoveel inwoners (die veel dichter op elkaar wonen) moeten verzorgen. Gegeven dat de USA een veel betere positie heeft, het op economisch vlak sterkste land is (/was?), niet bepaald een zorgstaat is en desondanks nog steeds zware tekorten heeft; kan je wel begrijpen dat de kans op slagen voor de Europese Republiek nogal… klein is.

2. Weerstand:

   ‘nuf said actually. Ik kan me onmogelijk voorstellen hoe landen als de UK, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Italië,… zomaar hun grenzen, macht en regeringen gaan overdragen aan de Europese Republiek. Hun samenwerking met de E.U. duurt maar zolang als zij er voordeel uit halen.

   Bovendien acht ik de kans dat een Schot, een Zuid- Italiaan, een Pool en een Portugees elkaar als landgenoten gaan aanvaarden ook heel klein. Integratie en immigratie zijn nu al zo’n hekelpunten…

3. Europees?:

   Hiermee bedoel ik vooral de betekenis van het ‘Europees’ zijn. Elke nationaliteit heeft wel iets specifieks. Belgen = goed bier, goede chocolade en goed onderwijs. Frankrijk = goede wijn, goed eten en romantiek. Duitsland = goede auto’s, discipline, correctheid.

   Maar wat is ‘Europees’? Is het goed om onze eigenheid op te geven voor eenheid en macht in de grote wereld, zonder dat we weten waar wij voor staan? Ik weet het niet. Mensen hechten veel belang aan hun dichte omgeving. We zijn altijd iets trotser om Belg/ Frans/ Brits/ Duits/… te zijn dan om Europees te zijn, niet?

Conclusie: Ja, Europa probeert een aantal ‘republikeinse’ dingen in te voeren. Maar nee, ik zie Europa nooit een echte Europese Republiek (als één staatsvorm) worden. Ik zie in de toekomst eerder de E.U. van vandaag in een iets stevigere vorm. Een hechte, effectieve en efficiënte economische, juridische en politieke samenwerking tussen lidstaten, met respect voor elkaars soevereiniteit.

Dit gezegd zijnde zou een Europese Republiek wel de max zijn, niet? Een nieuwe wereldmacht, nieuwe kansen,… Een Europa dat al sinds de tweede wereldoorlog in de schaduw van de USA staat en dat eindelijk weer zijn positie inneemt als het beloofde land voor slimme en normale mensen
